Clean Popo has expanded our business to include a wide variety of home services. One of these services is snow removal from sidewalks and from around cars parked throughout Hoboken. When shoveling snow from around cars to give them a path to escape from being trapped in a parking spot there is really no need to use salt, but removing snow from sidewalks is another story...

Although snow might be cleared completely from a certain sidewalk, fluctuations in temperature can cause the remaining snow lining the path to melt and then freeze again on the cleared surface causing a dangerously slippery situation. There are a few solutions to remedy this situation all with varying degrees of cost, effectiveness, and environmental impact. If you are just looking to add some grip to the sidewalk doing so can be done as simply as just spreading a bit of sand or even kitty litter on the icy section of sidewalk. Unfortunately, this does nothing to melt the ice. It does add enough grit to the surface to prevent slips and falls however.

More times than not, sand or cat litter is just not enough and salt has to be liberally applied. Salt not only adds grip to the surface, but it also does something almost magical. It reduces the freezing temperature of water!

Although there are quite a few varieties of salt available for purchase, rock salt and calcium chloride are the two primary varieties. We recommend only using calcium chloride, NOT rock salt. The below chart of these two chemical's properties is why:

Rock Salt

 • Effective to 15°F (-9°C).
 • Melts ice slowly
 • Can harm certain metals and concrete
 • Harmful to vegetation
 • Harmful to pets and other animals
 • Inexpensive
Calcium Chloride

 • Effective to -20°F
 • Melts ice quickly
 • Will not harm concrete or other surfaces
 • Will not harm vegetation
 • Less harmful to pets and other animals
 • More expensive than rock salt

As you can see, rock salt is not as effective as calcium chloride, especially at very low temperatures. Furthermore, the corrosive properties of rock salt make it destructive to metal containing masonry, plants, pets, and wild animals.

So what are you going to buy and use the next time a big snow storm comes through Hoboken or Jersey City? Well, it is up to you, but we hands down recommend calcium chloride!

Another alternative is just to call Clean Popo and have us handle your snow removal and salting requirements. From cleaning, to painting, to snow removal, we do it all!

<![CDATA[The Magic of Vinegar and Water]]>Wed, 13 Nov 2013 17:27:52 GMThttp://www.cleanpopo.com/ves-5-star-cleaning-blog/the-magic-of-vinegar-and-waterPicture
Vinegar is great on salads, but did you know you can also use it to clean all around your home? It's true! Just be sure to use distilled white vinegar... and leave the olive oil out of the mix. :-)

Vinegar may be a bit stinky, but it really is one of those "magic" household cleaners. It is a natural and non-toxic option for home and office cleaning, and is also quite inexpensive.

One of vinegar's "magic" properties is that it is great at removing all sorts of mineral build up. Whether this means using it to clean the lime build up off of and out of your shower heads and faucets, or even to clean out your automatic coffee maker!

For those with small children, vinegar is also great for cleaning things like toys without using a toxic cleaning product. Believe it or not, it can also be used to peel off hard to remove stickers and decals.

Have a garbage disposal? Then you know it you leave it too long it will start to emanate a foul odor. Simple, just freeze some vinegar in an ice tray and run it through. Your garbage disposal will be smelling like new in no time.

Perhaps Clean Popo's favorite use of vinegar is the simplest. Just mix it with water and it is a great substitute for window cleaning solution. And works just as well!

We just touched on a few of the many uses of vinegar to clean around the home. Have some more helpful tips? Please share in our comments section.

And of course, if you don't feel like cleaning your own Hoboken home, just give us a call. We are here to help.

 6. Raise or lower the temperature of your home by 1 or 2 degrees

<![CDATA[Roombas and Other Cleaning Robots]]>Wed, 10 Jul 2013 18:04:16 GMThttp://www.cleanpopo.com/ves-5-star-cleaning-blog/roombas-and-other-cleaning-robotsPictureRosie the Robot from The Jetsons
I can remember watching The Jetsons as a little kid and thinking to myself how cool it would be to have a robot that did housework... well perhaps one with a little less attitude than The Jetson's Rosie, but still. Now that The Jetsons television show is in syndication and cleaning robots actually do exist, I thought I would take this opportunity to explore consumer cleaning robot options.

At this point in time, nothing on the consumer market comes close to Rosie. Even still, there are a few companies such a iRobot, Neato, and Dirt Devil which make pretty cool little machines. Ranging in price from about $100 all the way up to over $600, it couldn't be clearer that not all cleaning robots were created equal. While the $100-$200 models may only clean one or two floor surface types, the more advanced models are much more capable and are often equipped with HEPA filters, automatically return to their charging stations after cleaning up, and can even figure out and remember for next time the most efficient cleaning map for specific rooms in your home!

Although we here at Clean Popo predict it will be quite some time before we are replaced by robot maids and housekeepers, the use of robotics in the cleaning industry is evolving quickly. Starting with floor sweeping robots just a few years ago, we have already seen the introduction of floor mopping robots, pool cleaning robots, and even gutter cleaning robots! One can only imagine what the next breakthrough will be...

The decision of which floor cleaning robot to purchase may be difficult, but the decision of which Hoboken area cleaning company to use is easy. Simply put, Clean Popo is the best!

<![CDATA[I'm disappointed with my cleaning service. Now what?]]>Mon, 10 Jun 2013 21:47:42 GMThttp://www.cleanpopo.com/ves-5-star-cleaning-blog/im-disappointed-with-my-cleaning-service-now-whatPicture
Our primary goal is complete client satisfaction, and although we have lots of fans the truth is that from time to time things just don't go the way they should. Whether expectations are misaligned, an important area that required cleaning was missed, or the team was unable to arrive during the booked arrival window, one of the unfortunate realities of the cleaning business, or any business for that matter, is that things do and will occasionally go wrong.

With that in mind, the Clean Popo operations team makes every effort reduce the number of incidents to an absolute minimum. Furthermore, when incidents do occur, we like to go the extra mile to make things right. Whether that means coming back to do a touch up cleaning service, finding another Clean Popo housekeeping team that better suits your needs, or coming up with a creative solution, we believe the resolution is of the utmost importance!

Clean Popo was founded and is operated by three ex-Five Star NYC hotel employees who have taken what they have learned about customer service from this competitive and fast paced industry, and applied it to the residential and commercial cleaning business. Want to see what a Five Star housekeeping experience looks like? Give us a Call or use our Easy Contact Form 24 hours a day.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

<![CDATA[Will My New Apartment Be Clean When I Move In?]]>Thu, 09 May 2013 13:32:48 GMThttp://www.cleanpopo.com/ves-5-star-cleaning-blog/will-my-new-apartment-be-clean-when-i-move-in
If you've moved into an apartment before, you know that there's no guarantee that the place will be spotless when you get there. Just think about the condition you left your previous place in before leaving. Many leases stipulate that the space is to be left in "broom swept" condition. More times than not this is not enough for the new tenant moving in and a good deep clean is necessary before moving all of your furniture and belongings into the space!
Do you really want to move in on top of someone elses filth?

Most people don't think about it, but the truth is that years of dirt, dust, and all sorts of nasty things build up in people's spaces over time. Perhaps the previous tenant lived there for years and never did a deep clean. Or maybe they were pet owners and you are highly allergic to cats and dogs. Whatever the case, the plain and simple truth is you just never know. Why risk moving in all of your furniture and belongings on top of someone else's dirt and grime? We here at Clean Popo always recommend scheduling a move in cleaning service for the day before or morning of your move in date. In fact, we can even pick up a set of keys from your real estate company and leave them in the apartment upon completion of the service if you aren't in town yet!

Call Clean Popo today and have us help you to make your Hoboken or Jersey City move in process as quick and painless as possible.

Don't wait until the day of the move to give us a call. Our weekend appointments go fast!
